LED light bulbs are solid-state lamps that utilize light-emitting diodes (LED’s) as their source of light. The LED’s that are involved can be semiconductor light-emitting diodes, organic LED’s (OLED), or polymer light-emitting diodes (PLED). PLED technologies are not available for sale at this present time.
The light output of individual light-emitting diodes is tiny in comparison to incandescent and fluorescent lamps. For this reason, multiple diodes are utilized together. Thanks to advancement in diode technology, high power light-emitting diodes make it possible to replace other lamps with LED light bulbs. They are interchangeable with other types of lamps.
If one were to lamps from standard AC power, they would need internal or external rectifier circuits. Diodes use direct current (DC) electrical power. LED light bulbs can be destroyed if they are operated at high temperatures. For this reason, LED lamps generally include heat management elements like heat sinks and cooling fins. LED light bulbs have a long life-span and are highly energy efficient. The up-front costs might be higher than fluorescent and incandescent lamps at first, but because of their long life-span and high energy efficiency, they can actually save you in the long run.
LED Light Bulbs – Practical
LED lamps can be used for general and special-purpose lighting. If colored light is required, LED’s can naturally emit many colors without the necessity for filters, which improves the energy efficiency over a white light source. LED light bulbs contain no mercury – in contrast to a fluorescent lamp. In addition, LED lamps turn on instantly, and their life-span is not affected by turning them on and off repeatedly. For this reason, they are well suited for light fixtures where bulbs are turned on and off very often.
The initial cost of an LED is around $30. This may sound expensive at first, but because of how long they last, and because of the money you save on energy by using these lamps, it actually works out to cheaper over the life-span of the bulb.
LED Light Bulbs – Durable
LED’s are very durable and tough, and can withstand much more abuse than a conventional florescent or incandescent light bulb which are very fragile. LED lamps contain no glass tubes – which are easily breakable – and their internal parts are supported strongly. Thus, they are resistant to vibration and impact.
LED’s are a great alternative to conventional light bulbs.
